Buying a funeral plan through a reseller
The table above lists providers who offer funeral plans direct to the public. All providers we have listed are members of the Funeral Planning Authority (FPA). The FPA is an organisation set up by the industry to regulate UK funeral plan market.
When looking to purchase a funeral plan, you may also consider using a reseller. The resellers are selling the plans of the providers above, for example Sunlife resells Golden Charter funeral plans and Age UK resells Dignity funeral plans.
Many of the resellers are insurance companies who are authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) who regulate and supervise the conduct of companies in the UK that provide financial products. Some resellers will handle your enquiry themselves, whilst others will send your details directly onto the funeral plan provider who will contact you directly. Going through a reseller should not cost you any more money as the funeral plan prices for each provider are well advertised, but it is always worth checking.

Factors to consider when buying a funeral plan
A funeral plan will give you peace of mind, knowing that at least a proportion of your funeral costs are covered in advance. But you need to understand exactly what you are paying for and what still needs to be covered.
If you wish to be buried, it is unlikely the cost of a burial plot will be included within your plan. Nor will the cost of the headstone or the wake. Each of these are substantial costs in their own right and will need to be paid for.
Will you incur any additional costs if you move house? Particularly, if you move to a more expensive part of the country where services, such as Funeral Director charges, are significantly more expensive than the area you have moved from?
Many funeral plan policies only make a “contribution” towards third party fees such as crematorium or clergy fees. There is no guarantee that the contribution made will cover all the costs associated with your funeral. You need to consider whether the contribution is sufficient.
Only the insurers will offer access to the Financial Services Compensation Scheme which will protect you in the event of a business failure.
As you can see the upfront prices should not be the only determining factor; the cheaper plans may not cover all of the features you might hope for and even the more expensive plans will not cover all your funeral costs.
