Family spending time together

A Will means that you loved ones will inherit the things you want them to and your wishes are carried out as you have instructed. Having a Will is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and family, but despite this one in three people die without making a Will.

Free Wills Month is a charity backed scheme where anyone over the age of 55 can have a Will written free of charge by a participating solicitor. Free Wills Month takes place every year during March and October.

Why are solicitors writing Wills for free?

The solicitor is not providing a free service. The charities will be paying the solicitor to write your Will.

Charities take part in the scheme as they are hoping that you might support them by leaving a gift in your Will. By taking up the offer of a free Will, you are not obliged to leave a charity any money, but be prepared for the solicitor to ask whether you want to select a charity to leave money to.

It is recommended that you leave, at least, the cost of writing the Will, but you may opt to make a leave a greater amount. The solicitor will not disclose to the charity whether you have left them any money in your Will.

Can anyone apply for a free Will?

In order to apply for a free Will, you need to be over 55 years of age. If you and your partner want a “Mirror Will”, only one of you need to be over 55 years old.

The scheme covers simple Wills, therefore if your financial affairs are complex, this might not be a suitable option for you.

Free Wills Month is confined to certain areas in England and Wales. You do not have to live in one of these areas to qualify, but you need to be able to travel for an appointment with a solicitor.

What charities are taking part in this scheme?

The charities taking part in Free Wills Month vary based on where you live, but include:

  • Age UK
  • Arthritis Research UK
  • Blue Cross
  • Breast Cancer Now
  • British Heart Foundation
  • Diabetes UK
  • Dogs Trust
  • Guide Dogs
  • Marie Curie
  • Mencap
    • Mind
    • National Trust
    • NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children)
    • Prostate Cancer UK
    • RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution)
    • Royal British Legion

What do I have to do to get my free Will?

  1. You will need to visit the Free Wills Month website
  2. Enter your details into the website to find out participating charities and solicitors near you
  3. Make an appointment with a participating solicitor during October.

Appointments are limited, therefore you should arrange an appointment as soon as possible. The scheme will close as soon as all appointments are booked. Please note, this scheme only covers simple Wills. If you need a more comprehensive Will covering more complex financial matters, Funeral Planning Experts can put you in touch with a Will writer to help you.
