Life insurance gives family financial protection in the event of an unexpected death or critical illness. But did you know that insurance policies can cover bizarre events such as being kidnapped by aliens or if your wedding is unexpectedly cancelled?

Here are a few of the more unusual insurance policies that have been taken out in recent years:

Multiple Birth Insurance

The extra expense of having two or even three children when you thought you were only going to have one, can really put a financial strain on new parents.  Parents to be can now take out insurance in case they are blessed with more than one baby.

In 2019, the cost of raising a child was estimated at £75,000, by taking out multiple birth insurance, you would receive a cash payout in the event you have twins or even triplets to ease the financial strain.

Body Part Insurance

If your livelihood is dependent on your body or how you look, it might be worth taking out insurance. In fact, lots of sports stars and celebrities have done just that and insured their various body parts for millions. Here are some of the strangest insurance policies:

  • Julia Roberts & America Ferrara – The movie star Julia Roberts and Ugly Betty star America Ferrera have both at some point insured their smiles.
  • Tom Jones – Had his trademark chest hair insured against thinning for a rumoured £5 million.
  • Daniel Craig – The highest earning James Bond actor reportedly insured his whole body for £7.5 million.
  • Michael Flatley – The dancer, famous for his dance shows Riverdance and Lord of the Dance, had his legs insured for an eye watering £40 million at the height of his career.
  • Keith Richards – The leading guitarist in the band 'The Rolling Stones' had his hands insured for £1.25 million.
  • Fernando Alonso – Sports stars also need to cover their money earning assets. Fernando Alonso, the Formula One champion, had his thumbs insured for £10 million.

Fantasy Sport Insurance

Fantasy sport is now being played by millions of people across the world. Most people play fantasy sports for fun, but for some, it is a much more serious matter. So serious in fact, that anyone who has a fantasy sports team can now purchase an insurance policy for players within their team. If their insured player gets injured, then the policyholder gets compensated with a payout.

Sports Fan Insurance

When World Cup fever hits, patriotism is at a high. Some sports fans are so passionate about their team that they have taken out a policy against the trauma of their team losing at certain rounds of the competition. Sports fan insurance also covers damage from riot events after sporting events, which can cost property owners thousands.

Alien Abduction Insurance

If you are worried about alien abduction, you might want to consider UFO insurance. Alien Abduction Insurance, also known as UFO insurance, provides cover if you can prove that you have been abducted by aliens.

In the event of a physical abduction by a UFO, the insurance provides medical coverage (including psychiatric care) and cash settlements. Hundreds of thousands of insurance policies have been taken out, but every insurance policy is different. So if you are considering such an insurance policy, make sure you read the small print to what is covered and how the payments are made.

Wedding Insurance

With the average cost of a wedding now estimated at £30,000, it could be one of the most expensive things you ever pay for. Wedding insurance doe not cover when people get cold feet or pull out of a wedding but covers things that are not within the couple's control putting their event at risk such as:

  • Supplier Issues (Suppliers going into administration, etc.)
  • People getting sick or injured
  • Property damage
  • Extreme weather
  • Lost or stolen gifts
  • Dress damage

The cost of wedding insurance is minimal compared to the cost of the wedding and what is at risk. A lot of time, effort and planning go into the wedding day, therefore it might make sense to have protection in place, in case the unforeseen happens.

Whilst many of these insurance policies are somewhat strange, having critical illness cover and life insurance to protect you and your family will provide you with peace of mind. If you need life insurance, Funeral Planning Experts can put you in touch with life insurance specialists.
